In today's world, protecting the environment is more important than ever. Traditionally, juice and milk cartons used a thin layer of aluminum to keep food fresh, but this layer makes the packaging very hard to recycle. To solve this, the global packaging leader SIG has introduced SIG Terra, a new material that replaces aluminum with a high-tech coating. This change keeps food fresh while making the cartons much easier to recycle.
In Europe, Pomurske Mlekarne in Slovenia is already using this new technology. One of the best things about SIG Terra is that it is "plug-and-play." This means companies don't need to build new factories; they can use their existing machines, making it easy and cheap to switch to a "green" option. Additionally, companies like SalzburgMilch in Austria are using the DomeMini series, which is a portable, easy-to-open bottle made from sustainable paper.
In Asia, SIG teamed up with Seoul Dairy Cooperative in South Korea to prove that you don't need aluminum to keep drinks fresh. They showed that milk can stay fresh for 12 months at room temperature without any aluminum. By removing the metal layer, the packaging is simplified into just two materials: paper and plastic. In South Korea, this new design is 10 times easier to recycle than old-style cartons.
Looking ahead to 2030, SIG wants to create a carton that is 90% paper and completely aluminum-free. This change is not just about science; it shows that being eco-friendly can also be good for business. Companies that choose these aluminum-free solutions now will lead the way in the future of the food and drink industry.
